Brief History of ChatGPT
1. OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, has been working on developing and training the language model since 2018.
2. GPT – 1 and GPT -2 are fundamentals of the foundation for GPT – 3.
3. GPT – 1 was trained using BookCorpus, a large dataset of over 11,000 unpublished blogs, aimed at enhancing language understanding.
4. On Valentine’s Day 2019, GPT 2 was introduced with the tagline “too dangerous to release”
5. GPT-2 was trained on 40 billion tokens of text from more than 8 million web pages linked in Reddit posts with at least three upvotes.
6. Later, GPT-2 was used to create musical compositions with MuseNet, simulating over 10 instruments, and with JukeBox, which generates music with lyrics and human-like voices.
7. OpenAI’s GPT-4, the largest language model to date, was released in March 2023 and supports over 50 languages.
8. The chatbot was trained on an extensive corpus of text data, about 570GB, including web pages, books, and other sources.
9. GPT-3 has been fine-tuned for various language tasks like translation, summarization, and question-answering. AI capabilities are even utilized in service desk software to improve response quality and efficiency.
10. Experts have hailed GPT-3 as a significant advancement in artificial intelligence due to its context understanding and relevant response generation. However, it has been criticized for lacking common sense and being prone to bias or misinformation.
11. OpenAI has made GPT-3 available through an API, enabling developers to create their own AI applications. Tools like Microsoft Teams and InvGate Service Desk have integrated GPT-based AI to enhance support efficiency.
12. Last year, GPT-3 was upgraded to GPT-3.5. The main differences include the number of parameters (GPT-3.5 has 1.3 billion) and its design, which aims to align with human values for safer and more natural interactions.
13. One key difference between GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 is that GPT-4 is multimodal, meaning it can understand text, images, and voice.
14. With GPT-4, users can create customized chatbots, or GPTs, for specific tasks like marathon training, creative writing, trip planning, or tech support.
15. Users have already created over 3 million customized GPTs, leading to the launch of the GPT store in January 2024, where paid users can download these chatbots.
16. OpenAI paused ChatGPT Plus sign-ups in November 2023 due to high demand and reopened subscriptions in December.
17. In terms of performance, GPT-3.5 surpassed only 10% of humans taking the U.S. bar exam for lawyers, while GPT-4 surpassed 90%.
18. ChatGPT-4 can handle over 25,000 words of text, while the free version can process only 16,384 words through the OpenAI API.
19. All users can access Bing, which uses customized GPT-4 technology for searches, via Microsoft Edge.
20. Paid users can access the internet through ChatGPT using the Bing selector, a feature unavailable with GPT-3.5.
21. Training the GPT-3 model reportedly cost OpenAI $12 million for a single run, while training GPT-4 cost $100 million.
22. ChatGPT is built using the large language model of the GPT-3 (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) family. It is fine-tuned using supervised learning as well as reinforcement learning. You can also enable data analysis and visualization, file conversion, code editing and other advanced tasks using ChatGPT code interpreter.
23. Early versions of the language model class include GPT-1 & GPT-2. The primary focus of the GPT-1 model was on language understanding; the second model was trained using Reddit articles of over 40 GigaBytes in size. It was also used to generate music on famous platforms such as JukeBox.
24. OpenAI released the GPT-3 model in 2020, which also powers the following:
- DALL-E: creating images from text.
- CLIP: connecting text and images.
- Whisper: multi-lingual voice-to-text.
- ChatGPT: chatbot, article writer, code writer.
25. The company released ChatGPT on November 30, 2022, built on top of GPT-3.5 through extensive training on datasets.
